Urban Forests

Urban Forests

Since the early 1980s the city of Cochabamba has experienced an accelerated expansion of its urban sprawl, especially in the southern zone. Expansion of the urban sprawl without planning has detrimental effects on the natural resources of the southern zone.

Among the most significant effects is the loss of forest mass with repercussions surrounding the local micro-climate, food sovereignty, and the sustainability of aquifers, and more. Further, the population in this zone does not have green areas or healthy spaces for recreation and meetings.

With the aim of improving the quality of life for the children, young people, women and men in these districts and to promote active participation in the conservation of native flora and fauna we are planting urban forests in the neighborhoods of the southern zone.

This will not only result in ecological benefits but also will empower the population to resolve local environmental issues.
