Climate Change

Resilience in Local Productive and Food Systems Against Climate Change

Climate Change is a planetary phenomenon that is creating challenges for populations and families. It puts stress on productive and food systems that surpasses local and institutional capacities to adapt. One manifestation of said phenomenon is a greater frequency and magnitude of climate events, which goes hand in hand with the loss of crops.

Faced with these challenges, it is essential to identify local practices and strategies for risk management and resilience of agro-food systems. We address these issues through our project Resiliencia de los sistemas productivos y alimentarios locales frente al cambio climático (Resilience of Local Systems in Production and Food in the Face of Climate Change). We have developed a framework for an applied research project for adaptation to climate change (PIA-ACC) with SDC funding.

This project works with the Center of Higher Studies for University Students (CESU), the Institute of Research in Social Sciences (INCISO), the Mayor de San Simón University, the Católica University, the Group of Work related to Climate Change and Justice (GTCCJ) through the CESU, the Agricultural Andes Foundation and the Gaia Pacha Foundation.

General Objective

Determine the climate resilience of local productive and agricultural systems through the identification and analysis of risk management strategies and practices developed by families and communities.

Specific Objectives
  • Describir y caracterizar los sistemas productivos y alimentos locales.
  • Describe and characterize the local productive and agricultural systems
  • Identify and evaluate in a participatory manner the climate risks, vulnerabilities, and threats that affect the local systems (agricultural and socioeconomic)
  • Identify and describe the local strategies and practices of risk management developed by families in the study areas, differentiating knowledge and application of this practices by men, women, the elderly, and young people.
  • Evaluate the resilience of the productive and agricultural systems, through the strategies and practices of climate risk management.
  • Prepare policy proposals that contribute to the strengthening of local capacities for the resilience of productive and food systems.
Sought Results
  • Productive, agricultural and climate characterization of communities in the municipalities of Santivañez, Pasorapa, and Tapacari.
  • Identification and maps of risks, capacities, strategies, and local practices against the variability of the climate
  • Analysis of resilience of local systems.
  • Proposals of guidelines of political policy to strengthen the capacities of communities and families against climate risks.
